Squidding Guide
Squid Fishing Guide: Key Tips and Essentials
Founded in Melbourne, Australia in 2020, Inku Squid Tackle has grown into a recognised squid fishing brand trusted by anglers worldwide. This free squidding guide covers everything you need to get started or improve your results, from choosing the right jigs and sizes to understanding glow, conditions, and techniques. Built from real on-the-water experience, it’s designed to help you fish smarter and catch more squid in all conditions.
1. Invest in Quality Jigs
Quality jigs make a big difference. Well-designed squid jigs sink naturally, hold glow longer, and feature sharp hooks that turn follows into hook-ups.
Inku Squid Jigs are designed and tested in Australian waters using premium components, with a wide range of colours, glow options, and sizes to suit all conditions.
2. Understand Squid Habitat
- Squid grounds typically consist of broken ground with sand holes and weed beds in depths of 1–6 meters, though they can also be found in much deeper waters.
- Knowing how to identify these environments will significantly improve your chances of success.
- Using Polarised Sunglasses can help find the squid grounds faster and much easier. We have our own floating glasses to help with this at a very affordable price too!

3. Choose the Right Jig Size and Weight
- Squid jig sizes from 2.5 to 4.0 are the most common and versatile, which is why we focus on crafting these sizes.
- Match jig size and weight to water depth:
- These sizes cast well and offer the perfect balance for squid to view them as a substantial meal.
4. Select the Right Colours for Conditions
Choosing Jig Colours for Conditions
Overcast or low-light conditions:
Use more natural and darker colours such as Inku Hunter, Red Devil, Rainbow Magic, Dark Knight, or Gold Runner to create a strong silhouette and subtle presence.
Sunny and bright conditions:
Opt for brighter or more transparent colours like Dynawhite, Glow Tiger, Glow Pink, Glow Orange, and Red Head, which work well in clear water and high light.
Darker and natural colours can still be highly effective in bright conditions, especially when squid are cautious or pressured.
All Inku Squid Jigs glow in the dark, making them ideal for low-light and night fishing. Use the Inku UV Torch to quickly charge the glow for maximum visibility.
For added attraction, the Inku Flash Range provides extra visual flash, while the Glow Rattle Range combines glow with sound and vibration to draw squid in from further away.
5. Switch Things Up
Using an Inku Float is an effective way to maximise your coverage and increase your chances of attracting squid, especially when fishing baited squid spikes. Deploy the float behind a drifting boat or kayak, or cast it from shore, while actively working your main squid jig. This setup helps draw in squid that may be following but hesitant to strike.
If squid activity slows, try changing jig colours or sizes. Squid often focus on prey of a specific size, and small adjustments can quickly turn interest into hook-ups.
For anglers targeting squid with a jig and float setup, the Inku Egi Float is also a popular option and is specifically designed to pair with squid jigs. More details on using the Egi Float effectively are covered below.

6. Optimal Fishing Conditions
Focus your efforts around sunrise and sunset, and during the 30 minutes before and after tide changes, when squid are typically most active.
Clear water generally provides better visibility and results, but all Inku Squid Jigs feature glow-in-the-dark technology, making them effective across low-light, overcast, and night fishing conditions.
When fishing in murky water or deeper zones, the Inku Glow Rattle Series takes it a step further by combining high-output glow with added sound and vibration, helping attract squid from greater distances.
When the sun goes down, we have you covered! We have all kinds of lighting to help catch more squid. This includes head torches, Uv torches to charge the glow of the squid jigs to green lights to attract more baitfish and squid!
